Book Review | The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

Jessie Nguyen

When I first saw the book years ago, I was hooked for a very shallow reason which is the cover. I can't find exactly what made me so interested in but after reading it, I understand why and hats off to whoever chose to use that cover because it works.

Set in the backdrop of the Roaring Twenties, The Paris Wife takes us on a journey back to a time of flappers, jazz, and artistic revolution. The novel's vivid descriptions immerse you in the dazzling world of 1920s Paris, where creativity knows no bounds. It's a love letter to an era where Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Picasso redefined the rules.

At the heart of this novel is the enigmatic figure of Ernest Hemingway, brought to life in all his charismatic glory. Narrated by his first wife, Hadley Richardson, we get an intimate glimpse into the man behind the literary legend. Hemingway's charisma, ambition, and inner demons are beautifully and painfully portrayed, making him a character you can't help but be drawn to.

“Books could be an incredible adventure. I stayed under my blanket and barely moved, and no one would have guessed how my mind raced and my heart soared with stories.”

Hadley Richardson, our protagonist and narrator, is a character who will steal your heart. I didn't know anything about her or her marriage to Hemingway before reading the book, thus, making it a very worthwhile trip. Her strength, vulnerability, and unwavering love for Hemingway make her a relatable and endearing figure. You'll find yourself rooting for her as she navigates the challenges of being a wife and muse to a literary genius.

The Paris Wife is, at its core, a love story - passionate, intense, and bittersweet. Hadley and Ernest's love affair is beautifully depicted, but it's also tinged with the melancholy knowledge of how it all ends. The novel skillfully captures the complexities of love and ambition, leaving you both enchanted and heartbroken.

For literature enthusiasts, the book is a treasure trove of insights into the lives of literary giants. You'll witness Hemingway and Fitzgerald in their early years, struggling and striving for greatness. The novel provides a backstage pass to the creation of literary masterpieces and the turbulent relationships that fueled them.

“It gave me a sharp kind of sadness to think that no matter how much I loved him and tried to put him back together again, he might stay broken forever.”

The Paris Wife also doesn't shy away from exploring the ups and downs of marriage, ambition, and sacrifice. It prompts introspection about the choices we make for love and art and the price we're willing to pay.

With its richly drawn characters, evocative prose, and an exploration of the sacrifices made for art, it's a novel that resonates deeply. So, if you're looking for a captivating blend of romance, history, and literary intrigue, don't miss out on this beautifully written gem.
